Following LeBron James’ announcement on Friday that he would be signing with the Philadelphia 76ers, the Sixers needed to make a move to create a little bit more room under the first apron to officially add the future Hall of Famer to the 15-man roster.

On Sunday, the team announced that they waived 24-year-old wing Dalen Terry. The Sixers exercised Terry’s $2.58 million option for the 2026-67 season at the end of last month, which was non-guaranteed. Terry appeared in 14 games with the Sixers, where he averaged 4.1 points, 1.6 rebounds, and 1.6 assists in 12.4 minutes per game.

The former first-round pick also played in three games with the Delaware Blue Coats (Sixers’ G League affiliate). He averaged 20.3 points, 4.3 rebounds, and 4.0 assists in 30.7 minutes per game. With Terry out the door, the runway was clear for Philly to sign the 41-year-old James on Sunday, which was made official on the NBA’s transactions log.

According to ESPN’s Shams Charania, James’ two-year, $8 million deal with the Sixers, which includes a player option, also has a “full 15% trade kicker.”

James, who is entering his 24th season in the NBA, is coming off another All-Star campaign this past season with the Los Angeles Lakers. The superstar wing averaged 20.9 points on 51.5% shooting from the field and 31.7% from beyond the arc, while also posting 7.2 assists and 6.1 rebounds in 33.2 minutes per game.

While he might not be the same player that we saw 3-5 years ago, James can still impact the game in a variety of ways and fit in nicely with a Sixers squad that has Joel Embiid, Jaylen Brown, VJ Edgecombe, and Tyrese Maxey.

Luckily for James, with the collection of talent around him in Philadelphia, he won’t need to be the second or third leading scorer on most nights. Instead, he could be more of a facilitator and pick his spots to be more aggressive on the offensive end.

In a Twitter thread posted by James following his announcement, the veteran forward said he truly still loves the game, that it’s his last decision, and he believes he can make the 76ers a championship team.

Needless to say, all eyes will be on James to see if he can accomplish that goal and end the Sixers’ championship drought.
