The Philadelphia Eagles have finally decided to part ways with veteran defensive end Bryce Huff after one season.

According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, the Eagles and the San Francisco 49ers are reportedly working on a trade that will send Huff to the Bay Area. In return, the Eagles will get a mid-round pick from the 49ers.

However, there are two caveats Schefter adds about this trade between the two NFC rivals. It cannot be finalized until after June 1, and Huff has reworked his contract.

Huff, who signed a three-year, $51 million deal last season with the Eagles in free agency, was scheduled to make $17 million guaranteed in 2025.

That said, the Eagles will reportedly only have to cover $9.05 million. The 49ers will take on the rest of Huff’s salary this season ($7.95 million).

It was only a matter of time before Philly moved on from Huff, especially after Jeff McLane of the Philadelphia Inquirer reported on Wednesday that the veteran defensive lineman wasn’t in attendance for OTAs and stayed away from all of the team’s spring practices.

The Eagles hoped that Huff would play a huge role in Vic Fangio’s scheme last year, but it never materialized. The 27-year-old defender only had 13 combined tackles, four quarterback hits, three tackles for loss, 2.5 sacks, and a forced fumble in 12 games.

According to Pro Football Focus, Huff had a 68.2 pass-rush grade (51st among 211 qualified EDGEs) and a 60.2 run-defense grade (102nd). The veteran defender also missed five games late in the season because of a wrist injury.

Huff eventually returned for the final two games of the regular season but played sparingly in the playoffs (13 total snaps) and was inactive for Super Bowl 59.

With the veteran defender on his way to San Francisco, the Eagles will hope for young guys like Nolan Smith Jr. and Jalyx Hunt to take that next step in their careers after a terrific 2024 season. Philadelphia will also look to see if veterans Josh Uche and Azeez Ojulari can fill in the void left by Huff.
