On Tuesday afternoon, the Philadelphia Eagles made a small addition to their practice squad as they prepare for their Week 2 matchup against the Tennessee Titans.
The Eagles announced that they signed veteran tight end Josiah Deguara to the taxi squad. Philly had an open spot on the practice squad after promoting wide receiver/kick returner Britain Covey to the active roster. Covey took Landon Dickerson’s spot on the 53-man roster. The Eagles officially placed Dickerson on injured reserve.
The 29-year-old Deguara was recently with the New York Giants, who signed him on August 26 and released him a few days later on August 29. Before joining the Giants, Deguara signed a contract with the San Francisco 49ers in July, where he appeared in two preseason games.
The veteran tight end has bounced around the league over his six-year playing career, suiting up for the Green Bay Packers, Jacksonville Jaguars, and the Arizona Cardinals. He has recorded 53 receptions (66 targets) for 471 yards and three touchdowns in 77 games. Deguara can also be utilized as a blocker and play on special teams.
He’s joining an Eagles team that currently has three tight ends on the 53-man roster (Dallas Goedert, Johnny Mundt, and E.J. Jenkins), but didn’t have one on the practice squad. Additionally, Philadelphia has two tight ends on injured reserve: Grant Calcaterra and Eli Stowers (rookie).
Deguara will also see a familiar face in Ryan Mahaffey, Eagles offensive run game coordinator and tight ends coach, who was in Green Bay for a few years during the tight end’s tenure. The Packers took Deguara in the third round of the 2020 NFL Draft, where he played for four seasons.
That being said, the Eagles are quite set at tight end on the 53-man roster. However, it never hurts to have depth on the practice squad, especially if an injury occurs.
Speaking of the practice squad, here’s where it stands as the Eagles return to practice on Wednesday.
